100 adult SFF Books Featuring Bi Main Characters

Bi Awareness Week has a special place in my heart with me identifying as bisexual for many, many years. Especially on TV the constant erasure of bisexuality/biromantisism is EXHAUSTING. Characters always just “switching” between being straight and gay, the many “you a lesbian now?”, the dude who gets made fun of because his ex “is now a lesbian”, no one ever being bi…. it’s no surprise we were all over the Loki TV show.

I’m not saying TV is completely lacking in good bi representation but books are WAY ahead of that. A couple years ago I was overjoyed to find a character that was like me, these days, while I’m still happy about every single one, it’s become a new normal. All the more shocked was I when I realized I never actually published a bi exclusive list on this blog (you can find all my other queer book rec lists here). Obviously that had to change and what better time to do that than on the first day of Bi Week.

A few quick notes on this list:

(Adult) science fiction and fantasy very rarely actually make use of labels, so do not expect characters stating explicitly to be bi but also be aware that while I always do my research and try to find out what the author intended the character to identify as, it’s very often just guesswork on my part.

My own definition of bi being “into people of your own as well as other genders” though, and these characters mentioning or having on-page relationships with both someone of their own gender as well of another gender, I’m hoping that this list is correct but I’m happy to be corrected! (that being said, there are some books on this list I haven’t actually read yet but I trust my sources…)

I’m using bi as the umbrella term here, meaning it also includes characters that are pan. I’m also saying “bi” and not “bisexual” because bi romantic people exist too.

For series, I’m mostly listing the first book, but in some cases it might only become obvious a character is bi in later books.

But trouble finds Cara when one of her eight remaining doppelgängers dies under mysterious circumstances, plunging her into a new world with an old secret. So, of course, then she gets laid off.

With no money and no mobility, with only her anger and internet research acumen, she discovers her suffering at the hands of a hero is far from unique. When people start listening to the story that her data tells, she realizes she might not be as powerless as she thinks.

Because the key to everything is data: knowing how to collate it, how to manipulate it, and how to weaponize it. By tallying up the human cost these caped forces of nature wreak upon the world, she discovers that the line between good and evil is mostly marketing.  And with social media and viral videos, she can control that appearance.

It’s not too long before she’s employed once more, this time by one of the worst villains on earth. As she becomes an increasingly valuable lieutenant, she might just save the world.

The Burning Day and Other Strange Stories by Charles Payseur

The secrets of lives not shared, not taken, not known, all can be found in the eclectic fiction of author Charles Payseur.

A sentient star deals with the trauma of their binary partner having collapsed into a black hole, and gets a little inspiration from the intrepid humans that happen by; a lumberjack must weigh his own safety and comfort against the lives of the dryads whose bodies and blood could buy him the life he desires; a young man deals with the loss of his fathers in a future where cold has claimed much of the globe; on a special holiday, people gather to burn their burdens from the previous year, unknowing if they’ll return again with the next day; and on a ship maintained by cats and powered by ectoplasmic energies, the Emperor of All Things has died, and a young man is given a very unique opportunity.

Chilling Effect by Valerie Valdes

When her sister Mari is kidnapped by The Fridge, a shadowy syndicate that holds people hostage in cryostasis, Eva must undergo a series of unpleasant, dangerous missions to pay the ransom.

The ship’s hold is full of psychic cats, an amorous fish-faced emperor wants her dead after she rejects his advances, and her sweet engineer is giving her a pesky case of feelings. The worse things get, the more she lies, raising suspicions and testing her loyalty to her found family.

To free her sister, Eva will risk everything: her crew, her ship, and the life she’s built on the ashes of her past misdeeds. But when the dominoes start to fall and she finds the real threat is greater than she imagined, she must decide whether to play it cool or burn it all down.

The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley

The Light Brigade: it’s what soldiers fighting the war against Mars call the ones who come back…different. Grunts in the corporate corps get busted down into light to travel to and from interplanetary battlefronts. Everyone is changed by what the corps must do in order to break them down into light. Those who survive learn to stick to the mission brief—no matter what actually happens during combat.

Dietz, a fresh recruit in the infantry, begins to experience combat drops that don’t sync up with the platoon’s. And Dietz’s bad drops tell a story of the war that’s not at all what the corporate brass want the soldiers to think is going on.

Is Dietz really experiencing the war differently, or is it combat madness? Trying to untangle memory from mission brief and survive with sanity intact, Dietz is ready to become a hero—or maybe a villain; in war it’s hard to tell the difference.

A worthy successor to classic stories like Downbelow StationStarship Troopers, and The Forever War, The Light Brigade is award-winning author Kameron Hurley’s gritty time-bending take on the future of war.

Planetfall by Emma Newman

Renata Ghali believed in Lee Suh-Mi’s vision of a world far beyond Earth, calling to humanity. A planet promising to reveal the truth about our place in the cosmos, untainted by overpopulation, pollution, and war. Ren believed in that vision enough to give up everything to follow Suh-Mi into the unknown.

More than twenty-two years have passed since Ren and the rest of the faithful braved the starry abyss and established a colony at the base of an enigmatic alien structure where Suh-Mi has since resided, alone. All that time, Ren has worked hard as the colony’s 3-D printer engineer, creating the tools necessary for human survival in an alien environment, and harboring a devastating secret.

Ren continues to perpetuate the lie forming the foundation of the colony for the good of her fellow colonists, despite the personal cost. Then a stranger appears, far too young to have been part of the first planetfall, a man who bears a remarkable resemblance to Suh-Mi.

The truth Ren has concealed since planetfall can no longer be hidden. And its revelation might tear the colony apart…

Far as the Family was concerned, Abby was one of them, though cursed, as I was, with the tragic flaw of mortality.

The daughters of a celestial demigod and a human woman, Makeda and Abby were raised by their magical father, the god of growing things—a highly unusual childhood that made them extremely close. Ever since Abby’s magical talent began to develop, though, in the form of an unearthly singing voice, the sisters have become increasingly distant.

Today, Makeda has decided it’s high time to move out and make her own life among the other nonmagical, claypicken humans—after all, she’s one of them. In Cheerful Rest, a run-down warehouse space, Makeda finds exactly what she’s been looking for: an opportunity to live apart from Abby and begin building her own independent life. There’s even a resident band, led by the charismatic (and attractive) building superintendent.

Tantalized by the man’s unfinished tale, Alok will do anything to hear its completion. So Alok agrees, at the stranger’s behest, to transcribe a collection of battered notebooks, weathered parchments, and once-living skins.

Science fiction and fantasy is truly amazing these days and I’m so very grateful for all the bi rep. I know there are many more books than just these and I’ll hit myself over the head once I notice what else I could have added but 100 102 is a good number to stop at and there is always room for a part 2.
