Summary
What if, instead of a prince, a forensic pathology student finds a mermaid washed up on the beach?
Mercy has a summer with her dads to get through before she can resume her studies and pursue her dream career. A summer at the beach. Nothing could be more horrible.
When her beloved dog sniffs out an otherworldly creature washed up on the sand, Mercy is bewitched by its blue skin and distorted human features. A find like this could change everything.
She doesn’t expect it to wake up just as she’s making her first incision.
My thoughts
Mercy & the Mermaid had me at hello! The story starts off, introducing you to two characters and they immediately put a smile on my face with their interaction and the type of person they represent. I just knew I was gonna like this one a lot. And I did.
I’m always a sucker for a good retelling, especially if I’m not even that big of a fan of the original. I like when authors put their own spin on it and make me like it, which was definitely the case with this Little Mermaid retelling. (And retellings are always better when turned queer)
Besides the cute romance, my favorite aspects of the story were 1) the neurospicy (and general disability) rep and 2) the supportive dads. I LOVE when a character has parents who are not only present but also a huge part of the story and supportive. Even better when they are queer too!
Mercy & the Mermaid is a very enjoyable queer retelling that made me laugh a lot and fall in love with all its characters. Would highly recommend!
